Integrated modules for high-efficient wastewater treatment, solid waste disposal and regenerative energy production in touristic resorts

Sponsorship: Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), Projektträger Wassertechnologie und Entsorgung (PtWT+E)
Duration: October 2003 - March 2008
Responsible person: Dr.-Ing. Berthold Günder
Project partners: Universität Stuttgart, Institut für Siedlungswasserbau, Wassergüte- und Abfallwirtschaft Abt. AWT and Abt. SIA, AT-Verband, Iberotel, Mainau GmbH
Projectidea:
As a nation with one of the highest number of tourist visitors, Germany carries a special responsibility for a sustainable and environmentally conscious tourism economy. In this context, the aim of this project is to conduct a practical test of an innovative, decentralised and modular concept for wastewater treatment, solid waste disposal and energy production by implementing the concept in a large holiday resort in Turkey. The modular plant combines a membrane bioreactor for the treatment of the wastewater originating from the hotel, with a digester unit in order to recycle the large amounts of organic waste (kitchen, green areas). The excess sludge produced in the plant will be supplied directly to the digester. The permeate will be poured onto the green areas; it can also be utilised for other purposes. The energy demand of the plant will be considered separately according to the main energy consumers (blowers, recirculation pumps), so that an optimisation can be carried out. It is expected that the advantages of both processes will justify the method and overcome the disadvantages. This will mean that these decentralised plants can be operated optimally from the point of view of both economical issues and quality of secondary products.

Within the framework of this project, MEMOS GmbH developed and constructed the membrane bioreactor and put it into operation on-site. The scientific support for the concept of the wastewater treatment and reuse units will be carried out by the project partner of University of Stuttgart , "Wastewater Technology" department.

The investigation program for the digestion module will be performed by the "Municipal Waste" department of the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality & Solid Waste Management in cooperation with the company Bi-Utec GmbH.

This modular, decentralised system is suitable for applications in sensitive regions such as tourism regions, coral reefs, islands, coasts, natural parks etc. The MODULAARE project will investigate whether this treatment plant concept is both economically and practically feasible. Above all, the practical implementation of the concept and its integration into the operation of the hotel will be a matter of particular interest.
